6000 personnel, including 3000 women, to be hired by Delhi Police

The Delhi Police announced on Thursday that it would soon hire over 6,000 officers, including 3,000 women, to strengthen police in the nation’s capital during a meeting on women’s safety presided over by LG VK Saxena.

Saxena emphasised the importance of boosting the proportion of female police officers in the force.According to a statement from the LG’s Office, the LG also ordered for increased and visible policing, accelerated construction of buildings for fast-track courts dealing with women’s safety issues, and integration of street lighting with the 311 app.

Saxena instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to finish the project within a month after learning that 1,406 dark areas in the city still needed to be lit.The LG expressed surprise that something so fundamental as streetlight repair and maintenance, which should happen in regular course, was being discussed and determined at his level after reviewing the issue of illumination of dark patches and prompt repair of street lights, according to the statement.


A total of 32 judges were appointed in fast-track courts for women’s safety, but the officials also informed him that there was a “acute shortage” of courtrooms to support the operation of the courts.

The Delhi government has been deliberating on the issue of building courtrooms since 2017–18, according to the Public Works Department (PWD), which notified the LG that no decision has yet been made in this regard.

Saxena stated that he will bring up the problem and the delay in switching to LED street lighting with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.


According to the statement, he emphasised the need to increase efforts to educate young and adolescent boys through gender workshops and revised curricula by the Education department and other relevant agencies, with the goal of reducing social mores and practises that support objectification of women.


The task force on women’s safety was also advised at the meeting that the Forensic Science Laboratory’s (FSL) handling of cases had greatly improved since their previous meeting.Swati Maliwal, the chairwoman of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), and senior law enforcement and government officials all attended the meeting.
