With a critical contract deadline looming, a coalition of advocacy organizations is calling on the Biden administration to permanently end the federal government’s use of a Florida detention center with a long and troubled history of negligence, abuse, and violence as a holding pen for undocumented immigrants.

On Wednesday, nearly 20 legal and human rights organizations sent a petition featuring nearly 1,600 signatures to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas urging the Biden administration to abstain from renewing a contract for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s use of the Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, Florida. Citing scores of official complaints going back years, a letter sent with the petition describes “pervasive medical neglect, unlawful use of toxic chemicals, racialized violence, inhumane treatment, physical abuse, sexual misconduct, and attacks on individual’s dignity and safety that occur regularly” at the facility.

Shares of Abbott India(up 2.17 per cent), Ipca Laboratories(up 1.66 per cent), Strides Pharma Science(up 1.02 per cent), Dr Reddys Laboratories(up 0.71 per cent) and Torrent Pharmaceuticals(up 0.66 per cent) ended the day as top gainers in the pack.

On the other hand, Aurobindo Pharma(down 2.5 per cent), Lupin(down 1.63 per cent), Gland Pharma(down 1.18 per cent), Alembic Pharmaceuticals(down 1.09 per cent) and Cipla(down 0.95 per cent) finished as the top losers of the day.


The Nifty Pharma index closed 0.19 per cent down at 13745.6.


Benchmark NSE Nifty50 index ended up 172.95 points at 17498.25, while the BSE Sensex stood up 740.34 points at 58683.99.


Among the 50 stocks in the Nifty index, 32 ended in the green, while 18 closed in the red.


Shares of YES Bank, IDFC First Bank, Adani Power, Vodafone Idea and Indian Oil Corp. were among the most traded shares on the NSE.


Shares of Deep Industries Ltd., Raymond, Aarvi Encon, Usha Martin and Tata Elxsi hit their fresh 52-week highs in today's trade, while Virescent Renewable Energy Trust, GMR Power and Urban Infra Ltd., Akash Infra-Proj, Nagreeka Capital and Supreme Infra hit their fresh 52-week lows.
